Battle Cry is a nifty new Civil War game from Avalon Hill. I like it a lot because it's a German style (i.e. simple and elegant) game you can play in less than an hour, instead of a more traditional hardcore wargame. There are continual arguments on rec.games.board about whether it is too simplistic/unrealistic. The fence rule is a prime example... fences run along hexsides, but are printed along the edges of hex tiles. If a unit adjacent to a fence is fired upon across the fence, it gets a defensive bonus, but only if it is on the tile with the fence; thus fences provide "one way" defensive cover. Perhaps one side is sunken, like the Sunken Road at Antietam. Who knows. It's a fun game in any case!
