Battle Cry Manhattan 8 These panels are take-offs on Watchmen IV, pages 19 and 20, in which Dr. Manhattan and the Comedian are in Vietnam. I'd been wanting to do a Civil War version for a while; it ended up getting more elaborate than I planned. This one's 2/3 the width of all the others in this storyline. I could pretend that was intentional since the panels it spoofs in Watchmen are also 2/3 of a page wide... but actually it's just because the picture is too big, and the image files would have been way too big at full width... I probably could have gotten better palette compression by splitting the 2 panels into separate images and doing an html table, but sheesh I've already spent enough time on this strip! :) Nathan Bedford Forrest said "War means fighting, and fighting means killing." William Tecumseh Sherman said "War is hell." The Gatling gun actually saw very little Civil War action, but if the Comedian were in the Civil War, I'm sure he'd have made heavy use of it. PS: Alert reader Tetsubo later wrote me: "Gatling guns don't fire all of their barrels at once. Only the top barrel actually fires a round. The other barrels are ejecting spent casings and cooling for the next rotation." Darn! I did some research before doing this strip but couldn't find an answer to this question in time. Next time I draw a Gatling gun firing, I'll do it better. :) The first one in this series is September 25. |
