Reflections on events arising from a recent review of Penny Arcade

Bench #3578. On Friday, Tycho posted a link to a review of Penny Arcade by Donald B. Jones III, along with hints to its witty satirical nature. (See the third large paragraph just before the Linksville graphic.) I was amazed by the hostile reactions to this review in the Low Pass forum, complete with the obligatory rambling illiteracy, homophobic blatherings, and other customary trappings of a forum flamefest. The anger continued even as a few posters pointed out that it was obviously a satire. It gets more meta and confusing as some posters who get the joke post ironic flaming babblings pretending they were outraged and didn't get it, or post supportive statements in the ironic vein of the review. If it's not sufficiently clear what Jones is up to, peruse his review of User Friendly.

Jones is doing an academic literary criticism spoof. People not into that scene might not get the humor, just as non-gamers might not get gaming humor. But non-gamers don't get angry at gamer humor, while the anti-Jones brigade remained hostile even after the humor was explained. So what's the difference? Personally, I enjoy the humor of both PA and Don Jones!

PS: In case you missed it, Tycho's Sunday news had another paragraph about this. And there were 2 other Bench strips on this subject (#3560 and #3561). I know I'm biased, but my favorite is still mine. :)
