In case anyone cares, I've been trying various materials for making these stamps. I started with white Sanford Magic Rub erasers, which I used for my first 5 stamps including the main bug characters. These erasers work pretty well; they're firm and easy to cut, but not crumbly. Today's maitre d' was carved from one of those brown crumbly art gum erasers, which as I suspected was not a great material: too soft and crumbly. Last Friday's actor in trashcan was from a pink eraser, which was stiff and harder to cut smoothly without some crumbling. A common challenge of all these erasers is their small surface area, which makes any sort of precision detail difficult.
The bugs series started March 9, though I didn't know it at the time.
