The peace sign has a murky history, but it seems it was first used as a symbol of peaceful protest in 1958. It possibly originated as a combination of naval semaphore symbols for N and D, for a Nuclear Disarmament march in Britain. Bertrand Russell may have been among those who created it. Without the vertical bar in the lower half, it is an early chemical symbol for phosphorus, a snooty car logo, and various other things.
